There are a range of issues that may be the reason for a ball screw breaking down. For example, when particles enter the ball nut, it can cause it to move less freely or to jam. In general ball screw repair can be done however. However continuous use of the ball screw apparatus may be a factor in causing it to break down. In situations such as this ball screw repair can require more work.
If you have have experience with a tool that uses these items, you will instantly consider ball screw repair when you detect a decrease in output precision. This inaccuracy in output is termed rough running, a result of repeated use of the ball screw over a long period of time. Gradual erosion is a direct effect of friction of the ball bearings against the threads. Over time the constant motion will file down the threads on the inside of the shaft, affecting the running of the ball bearings. Undoubtedly ensuring that the apparatus is properly lubricated will lessen the friction created by the motion of the ball bearings, while concurrently stopping obstructions from developing in the mechanism thus staving off the need for ball screw repair for a longer period of time.
If you decided to apply lubricants ensure not to use too much. When the larger apparatus is in motion, the oil or other lubricant can be forced into the ball screw making the cylinder shatter. Do not neglect the fact that ball screw repair is sometimes necessary if the machine itself begins to deteriorate with age. Coverings and cladding become less effective as they age, leaving apertures through which dirt particles may enter the ball screw.
Potentially the ball screw components themselves can break, usually due to a malfunction in the machine. Usually this is known as machine crash that has the effect of a sudden increase in energy being transferred to the ball screw over a short space of time. Then this energy may cause the ball screw shaft to twist. Alternatively it may damage the balls in the tube or affect the ball nut casing. If something like this happens the ball screw might not show the effects immediately after the event, but then it may develop problems and ball screw repair is then required.
Minor wear and tear on a ball screw can usually be treated, as the ball screw can be reground. Components of the screw may be changed, but ball screw repair may occasionally be impossible.
